Debates surrounding Kanye West’s Adidas Originals presentation this week have been on fire, not because people love to hate Yeezy, but because his collection looked uncomfortably familiar. The first glaring copy was West’s bulletproof jacket-inspired shirts, which appeared to be blatant rip-offs from ones shown more than a decade ago during Helmut Lang’s SS ’98 presentation. On top of that, the collection’s reoccurring motif of nude bodysuits were evocative of Maison Martin Margiela archives, the color palette and distressed finishing reminiscent of Raf Simons’ early work and the overall color story and mood seemingly pulled from the mind of Rick Owens.
Yeezy says that he’s “here to crack the pavement,” but stealing
from reputable designers is definitely not the way to do so.
