Why The CW’s ‘Dynasty’ Is My New Guilty Pleasure
As an avid soap-opera fan, I was thrilled when The CW announced they were going to reboot the 1980s hit soap-opera. Since Dynasty premiered on October 11th 2017, I’ve been glued to my TV screen every Wednesday night to find out what the Carrington clan is up to. Even though this reboot is different from the original version in many ways, it still has the perfect mix of love triangles, drama, and iconic one-liners that hook soap junkies like myself. This reboot, which is created and executive produced by Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, takes you into the tumultuous lives of the rich and powerful where nothing is as perfect as it seems. The show centers on the Carringtons, one of the wealthiest families in the United States and owners of Carrington Atlantic, a power utility company based in Atlanta.
In the first few episodes, it focuses on the feud between Fallon Carrington, daughter of Blake Carrington, and her new step-mother, Cristal. But as the story progresses, new revelations come to light. As if the drama between these two iconic characters wasn’t enough as they battle over who’s going to be the next COO of the company, there are murder mysteries involved and Cristal’s shady past is starting to catch up to her, which threatens to overshadow her seemingly perfect new life as part of the Carrington dynasty. Also, each episode ends with a cliffhanger that forces you to stay tuned and find out what happens next in the lives of the top 1%.
Elizabeth Gillies, best known for her role on Nickelodeon’s Victorious, blesses the audience with her performance as the sassy, elegant, strong, independent, powerful, and sometimes spoiled Fallon Carrington. Fallon manages to deliver hilarious one-liners, while working to build her own company and show everybody that, as she constantly reminds her father Blake, women can indeed be anything they want and have it all.
One of the main themes in the series is the importance of family and how they’ll do everything to protect each other no matter at what cost, as it is shown with Grant Show’s performance as the powerful and ruthless Blake Carrington. Blake will go to great lengths to protect his family from what he perceives might threaten his legacy or his marriage to Cristal.
Alexis, as reported by Variety, “will return unexpectedly to their world, challenging Blake’s marriage to Cristal, seeking to reunite with her children, and fighting to claim what is hers.” As someone who has yearned for Sheridan’s return to the small screen since her departure from Desperate Housewives, I can’t wait ‘till she makes her debut on Dynasty.
