The United States Postal
Service announced that it will be honoring one of America’s most iconic
fashion designers. Beginning in the new year, the USPS will release a
series of 11 stamps featuring an Inez and Vinoodh–photographed portrait
of Oscar de la Renta and individual homages to some of his signature
designs. There are zoomed-in studies of his boldly colorful and artfully
draped pink, green, and yellow taffeta ball skirts; a close-up view of
blue pleated ruffles; and, of course, the intricate floral prints he was
so celebrated for. Though the designer sadly passed away in the fall of
2014 at age 82, his house still stands proudly at the pinnacle of
American fashion design.
It is rare, at least here in the U.S.,
for a major fashion designer to grace their own postage stamp, but that
doesn’t mean other countries haven’t paid respect to their own
homegrown sartorial heroes. Back in 2012, the United Kingdom’s
Royal Mail released a special series of stamps featuring the likenesses
and work of designers like Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.
Earlier this year, J.W.Anderson sold a set of postage stamps decorated
with the Spring 2016 campaign images shot by Jamie Hawkesworth.
So, dear technophiles, you might want to put down the
email-filled iPhone and close the direct messages on Instagram. With
these new Oscar de la Renta stamps, the whole signed, sealed, delivered
thing just became a lot more appealing.
