MMA Fighter James Gallagher Unveils A Bulgetastic Surprise

 

James ‘The Strabanimal’ Gallagher trains with Straight Blast Gym and fights at featherweight – so comparisons to Conor McGregor are inevitable.
Like McGregor, the 20-year-old is not short on confidence and is well capable of delivering a withering put-down to an opponent.

 

His record in professional MMA moved to 4-0 after he beat English rival Mike Cutting in London on his Bellator debut back in July.
Tonight he takes on American Anthony ‘Pretty Boy’ Taylor, who has a 1-1 record as a professional.

 

Gallagher knows people will continue to compare him with McGregor but his sole focus is on making his own name.
Trash-Talking
On the subject of trash-talking, he told SunSport: “I just say what I think. Conor is on a level of his own.
“He finds a way to get into his opponents head and is amazing at it.”
He may not be at McGregor’s level when it comes to the talk but ‘The Strabanimal’ did have a few confident words for his opponent during Wednesday’s press conference.

 

Starting out in mixed martial arts
Gallagher is obsessed by the sport and quit school as a teenager to train with John Kavanagh at Straight Blast Gym in Dublin.
He said: “I started when my uncle who was my karate coach took an MMA fight. I went in and tried it out and now I’m obsessed
“I started training MMA when I was 12 and had my first amateur MMA fight at 13 in Strabane. I won by an armbar in 50 seconds. It was pretty special.”

 

Tonight’s opponent
Submission-specialist Gallagher is not short of confidence ahead of tonight’s scrap.
He blasted: “I’ll bet my life on it that I’ll put this guy away. I know this is only my fifth pro fight but it’s my 22nd in pro and amateur.
“The fans are in for a quick finish. I’m going to go out and choke him inside the first two minutes. It’s inevitable.”

 

Working with coach John Kavanagh
Dubliner Kavanagh is regarded as one of the top MMA coaches in the world for what he has done with Conor McGregor.
And Gallagher insists there is nobody better.
He said:” He has a special way of explaining things and the way he thinks about new moves is something else.
“It’s pretty surreal to get to train with the best coach in the world everyday.”
His genius nickname
Gallagher hails from Strabane in Tyrone – hence the nickname.
He revealed: “It was kind of just a local thing as I come from Strabane. 

 

“One time me and Conor (McGregor) were on the same card in Derry and I’ve been called it ever since.”
Fighting in front of Irish fans
Former UFC fighter Paddy ‘The Hooligan’ Holohan had Gallagher in his corner on that wild July night in 2014, when the UFC came to the 3Arena and the fans raised the roof.

 

He knows how the atmosphere can boost a fighter and can’t wait to show his stuff at the same venue.
“That was an unbelievable experience. So I know what it’s like to walk out there. I’ve felt it.“And it’s not going to be a shock when I walk out this time. I know how it feels and I can’t wait for that feeling.”
