Today, the fashion world is bidding farewell to the space age couturier André Courrèges who passed away at the age of 92.
Known for his futuristic creations, the French fashion designer, originally a civil engineer, began his career in fashion at the age of 25 when he went to Paris and worked at Jeanne Lafaurie fashion house. He moved a few months later to Balenciaga.
Courrèges was always inspired by modern architecture, technology, new fabrics, modernism and futurism in art and design. Laying claim to the invention of the miniskirt, he has always pushed his creative spirit to the extreme - which led him to produce some of the 20th century's most distinctive designs.
In 1961, the designer founded his maison de couture and in 1964, he showcased one of his most iconic collections, "Space-Age", which took geometry as a main source of inspiration. His favorite materials included plastic, metal and PVC, while the colors he used were primary such as metallic, white, red and yellow.
His creative concept inspired high-street brands and his 'Space-Age' marvel soon led to a market invasion of plastic skirts and jackets, crash helmets, white boots and goggles.
André Courrèges' creativity and avant-gardist spirit will always be remembered and will constitute a fashion force to be reckoned with.
