A couple of weeks ago I’m having brunch with two dear friends. These
are my industry friends one being a huge celebrity make up artist and
the other a top leading celebrity publicist in West Los Angeles. We
were talking about style and I brought up MTV’s House of Style.
For the 90’s it was way ahead of it’s time producing relevant youthful
content to the masses and it stared the current it girl Cindy Crawford.
Started thinking how MTV was the equivalent of YouTube in it’s hay
day providing content. Teens and young adults would watch and discuss
what was on MTV. Never before was there real focused driven content to
inform youth. From their “Rock the Vote” campaign to launching a social
experiment called the “Real World” MTV was able to mobilize the youth
and a physical call to action at MTV rally’s in American malls. They
also had playful music and fashion driven shows hosted by reporters
under 30 years old. Here is a taste of what MTV looked like in the 90’s. House of Style
was a regular weekly program on MTV which was rare on this mostly music
video driven only program.
